JAMIE ROSARIO
I recently had the chance to visit Jamie’s studio, located in the west-end neighbourhood of Toronto, Roncesvalles. Jamie and I met in high school but reconnected recently after the 2024 OCAD Grad-Ex where she was showing her graduate capstone collection: “The Spaces In Between.”
The collection consists of four necklaces, all possessing whimsical names that are reminiscent of their nature-inspired composition and movement. Her pieces are dainty, yet bold and stray away from main-stream minimalistic jewelry trends.
I knew that Jamie would be a designer to keep an eye on and was excited when she accepted my invitation to participate in DIMMI DIMMI’s first community fashion show: Anything Goes. On the runway, she showed several jewelry pieces cross-styled with garments made by Maxime Chercover of SAGRADESA- combinations that exuded movement and bold expression.
Jamie’s primary medium is silver. Her work is heavily inspired by nature and sensory experiences in natural/outdoor environments. Her necklace/back piece titled “Entwined, Enlaced,” is a statement piece showcasing crocheted sterling silver. Thin, wispy crocheted wire is draped over the back when worn; her intent with this piece was to simulate the sensation of delicate branches brushing over skin – it is a sensory experience that brings comfort to her.
I was able to get a first-hand look of her process in-studio and watch her make a signature pair of earrings, involving lots of silver wire and hammering.
